Accommodation

A limited number of rooms in low-cost accommodation will be made available. All rooms will be basic, en-suite rooms in Sir Charles Groves Hall, a student accommodation building located less than 10 minutes walk from the meeting venue. If interested in this option, you must indicate this when you register (before Friday 21st February, link above), or contact the LOC before Friday 21st February. Further details about the accommodation will be provided here shortly. Some further hotels around Manchester city centre suggested by the LOC include:

Venue

The Meeting will take place in the Schuster Building at the University of Manchester, Manchester M13 9PL. We will use the Rutherford Lecture Theatre, Jocelyn Bell Burnell Lecture Theatre, and Schuster Foyer. There will also be smaller meeting rooms available for personal use and free discussion.

Travel

Manchester is linked by rail to a range of major cities across the UK, and is served by Manchester Airport. For general travel guidance to the city, including from airports other than Manchester, please follow this link to advice provided by the University of Manchester.

The main University campus is easily accessible by foot or bus from Manchester city centre. Guidance on taking public transport to/from the main campus is provided at this link by Transport for Greater Manchester. Local Tips and Tricks

We provide a short list of local tips and idiosyncrasies that visitors to Manchester and the UK may find useful during their stay:

• Weather - The average July temperature in Manchester is around 20C. Day-to-day weather can be unpredictable and rain is common. Further guidance and forecasts can be found on Visit Manchester and The Met Office


• Tipping - In cafes and restaurants it is not generally expected to tip hospitality staff directly. For a sit-down meal, a service charge of ~10% will usually be included in the bill.


• Splitting bills - It is common practice to ask for eateries to split a group bill into separate payments for each individual. This is helpful for organising reimbursement receipts etc.


• Cash vs card - Manchester is increasingly cashless. While it is always helpful to carry cash in case of emergencies, card payments are the norm in the majority of scenarios. There will be several shops and eateries that only accept card.


• Public Transport - The most straightforward way to use public transport in Manchester (The Bee Network) is with contactless payments. When taking the tram, there are contactless points on every platform. You must tap on before boarding and tap off after exiting. When taking the bus, you must tap on with the driver only when boarding. Buses also have a hopper fare, which means that you can use as many buses as required within 1 hour, and you will only be charged £2.00 for a single journey. • Taxis and rideshares - Local taxis can be found at dedicated taxi ranks around the city centre, train stations and the airport. Do discuss payment options (whether card or cash is accepted) with the driver before boarding. Uber is the most common rideshare app and this is widely available around Manchester.


• Car restrictions along Oxford Road - For those who may be travelling or attending by car, please note that there are daily restrictions along Oxford Road (the main road passing through the University). The section of road by the University is only open to buses, taxis and cyclists between 6am to 9pm every day. You will be fined by the council if you pass through this section by car. • Oasis reunion - Please note that Oasis are playing their reunion tour in Manchester on 19 and 20 July. It is likely that there will be an increased influx of people in and around town on these dates.
